Abstract

1,075,686. Embossing; printing-surfaces; coating with pre-formed sheets. HICKS & OTIS PRINTS Inc. April 30, 1965 [July 10, 1964], No. 18383/65. Headings B6C, B6G and B6J] Sheet material 10 having voids therein (e.g. foamed polyurethane of polyester or polyether type, batting made from nylon fibre or polyester fibre &c.) is drawn by feed rollers 15, 16 between rollers 12, 13, the roller 12 being provided with a plurality of holes 20 arranged in a desired pattern. Water, which may have dye material incorporated therein, is supplied to the roller 12 from a trough formed by a doctor blade 21, and is transferred from the holes to the sheet on contact therewith, forming heatresistant printed areas. The sheet then passes over a plate 14 and under a flame 18 from fuel in a perforated pipe 17, and where not protected by the heat-resistant material, the material of the sheet is fused so that the voids are filled and the material collapses, depressing the surface in the unprinted areas. A fabric sheet 24 can then be laminated to the embossed sheet, adhering only to the fused portions, or the sheet may have a fabric backing. If the water is thickened with starch or methyl cellulose, the sheet can be formed with areas depressed to different depths by varying the depths of the holes 20. Printing-surfaces.-An intaglio roller 12 is formed with holes 20 of varying depth arranged in a required design, the holes taking up the printing-material and transferring it to the sheet to be printed. Coating with pre-formed sheets.-A sheet of foamed polyurethane or fibrous batting is stretched before having applied thereto a fabric sheet, so that when it returns to normal size, the fabric exhibits small decorative folds.
