Abstract

1,075,401. Laminates and laminating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 24, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1964; Aug. 6, 1964], Nos. 879/64 and 32015/64. Heading B5N. In a method of making a laminate comprising a core of foam plastics sandwiched between and bonded to two outer facing sheets, a liquid foamable mix is applied to the lower facing sheet and the two sheets are conveyed in parallel relationship while the foam core is formed and set during which time a predetermined constant pressure is exerted on the foam. As shown the conveying means comprises two endless belts 5 and 8 supported by backing platens 11 and 12 and connected to upper and lower frames 2 and 4 respectively. Rods 16 fixed to the lower frame pass through brackets 17 on the upper frame so that the upper frame can move up or down with respect to the lower frame. In operation the upper frame is raised clear of the lower by means of lifting screws 18; the conveyer belts are set in motion and foamable mix 14 fed on to the lower facing sheet 13. When steady operating conditions are achieved the screws are retracted so that the upper assembly rests on the laminate thereby exerting constant pressure thereon. This may be adjusted by weights, springs, or hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders. The platen may be longitudinally flexible by being made of non- rigid material stiffened by rigid lateral cross members, or of linked plates; it may be replaced by a series of rollers. Further embodiments are disclosed in which (i) the upper frame is connected by swivel arms to the lower frame, (ii) only part of the upper assembly is movable (Fig. 5, not shown). The facing sheets may be of paper, wood, plastics, metal, rubber, paperboard, plasterboard or asbestos. The foam may be polyurethane.
