Abstract

A compound of the formula <FORM:1075270/C2/1> and preparation thereof by mixing equimolecular proportions of calcium glucoheptonate and calcium galacturonate in aqueous solution, heating the mixture to 80 DEG C. then evaporating the bulk of the water and drying the resultant syrup, containing about 70% by weight of the desired product, under a vacuum of 60 mm. of mercury for 1 hr. at a temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C. Calcium glucoheptonate is obtained as an approximately 18% aqueous solution by the action of hydrocyanic acid on D-glucose and treating the intermediate nitrile with slaked lime. Calcium galacturonate is obtained as an approximately 6% aqueous solution by enzymatic hydrolysis of apple pectin using a polygalacturonase to give a double salt of galacturonic acid which is then converted to the calcium salt.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise calcium glucohepto-galacturonate of the formula: <FORM:1075270/A5-A6/1> either in solid form, optionally in association with solid pharmaceutical excipients, or in solution and are suitable for oral administration in calcitherapy. The compositions may also include calcium galacturonate and/or calcium glucoheptonate.
