Abstract

A process for purifying lac comprises either suspending it in an aqueous alkaline solution which has an alkali metal or ammonium cation concentration such that the resulting lac salt is maintained as a solid phase, or dissolving it in an aqueous, alkaline, alkali metal or ammonium salt or hydroxide solution, and adjusting the alkali metal or ammonium cation concentration so as to precipitate the resulting lac salt as a solid phase, followed in either case by separating the purified lac salt from the residual liquid. The purified lac salt may then be dissolved in water, bleached, precipitated with acid and recovered.
