Abstract

1,075,129. Refrigerating. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. April 27, 1966, No. 18371/66. Heading F4H. In an absorption refrigeration system of the type described in Specification 1,043,326, means responsive to the formation of crystals in the shell side of liquid heat exchanger 26 are provided for directing hot solution from the first generator 10 into the tube side of exchanger 26 to melt the crystals. As shown, such means comprise a chamber 98 connected to the line 80 conveying solution from the second generator 14 to the absorber 22 via the shell side of exchanger 26. Chamber 98 contains two electrical probes 94, 96 arranged respectively below and above the normal solution level so that when the level increases due to blockage of exchanger 26 by crystals an electrical path is completed between the probes and a switch 102 is moved to open a solenoid valve 106 in a line 110. Hot solution from generator 10 is thus supplied to the tube side of exchanger 26 via line 110, the sump of evaporator/absorber shell 18 and pump 88 to melt the crystals. Switch 102 is also arranged to de-energize the pump 72 circulating coolant to the absorber and condenser. Line 110 may alternatively discharge directly to the inlet of pump 88 or to the tube side of exchanger 26. Probes 94, 96 may be disposed in the sump 49 of generator/condenser shell 12 and pneumatic sensing and control may be employed.
