Abstract
1,075,022. Spinning apparatus. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. June 2, 1965 [July 6, 1964], No. 23436/65. Heading B5B. Crystalline olefin polymer having melt index of 0.2-20 is spun by extrusion through a die orifice at above 500 F. The emerging fibre is advanced through a plurality of controlled heat zones containing an inert gas, succeeding zones being at gradually decreasing temperatures. A plurality of the heating zones is at above the m.p. of the polymer. The fibre remains above its m.p. for not less than 5 inches, and is drawn while at above its m.p. It is then cooled to 60-100 F.; and then heated to 280-320 F. and drawn to several times its own length to induce molecular orientation. The polymer may be isotactic polypropylene.
