Abstract

A needled felt cover material is formed by carding fibres and assemblying them into a batt of the required thickness, which is then passed through a needling machine and repeatedly pierced by the needles so as to move the fibres in the batt into interlaced relation. The fibres used may be animal, vegetable or synthetic fibres. A backing may be applied to the cover material after the beginning of the needling operation. The material so-obtained is suitable for covering tennis balls.ALSO:A tennis ball comprises a cover of needled felt. The felt may be used either with or without a backing, the backing when used comprising either paper, or a knitted or woven fabric and preferably being secured to the felt by the action of the needles during the fiinal stages of the needling process.
