Abstract

A mixture suitable for oxidation by nitric acid to give purified dibasic acids is obtained by reacting a precursor cycloalkane with a molecular oxygen containing gas in the presence of a boric acid providing material, converting the cycloalkanol borate ester in the product to the cycloalkanol, recovering an oxygenated cycloalkane mixture containing cycloalkanol, cycloalkanone and an objectional amount of higher boiling residue, distilling a cycloalkanol/cycloalkanone fraction from a portion of the mixture and adding this fraction to the remaining portion to produce a mixture in which the amount of said residue is not over 14 parts per 100 parts by weight of oxygenated cycloalkane mixture. The mixture so obtained may be oxidized by nitric acid to give the corresponding dibasic carboxylic acid. The process is particularly suitable for the oxidation of C6-C8 saturated cyclic hydrocarbons and examples are given of the oxidation of cyclohexane to give a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone which is oxidized by nitric acid in the presence of ammonium metavanadate and copper.
