Abstract

1,074,328. Wet spinning polyvinyl alcohol filaments. KURASHIKI RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Dec. 19, 1963 [Jan. 7, 1963], No. 50136/63. Heading B5B. The production of polyvinyl alcohol filaments by wet spinning an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol into an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide is characterized in that the spinning is effected at a temperature below 50‹ C., that the concentration of the aqueous solution of caustic alkali is within the range 10 to 30% and that the PVA is of such a nature that the " swelling degree "of a film of the PVA made at 30‹ C. in water at 30‹ C. is less than 2-0. The swelling degree is defined as the ratio of the difference between the weight of the water-swollen film and the weight of the film dried after having been swollen to the weight of the film dried after having been swollen. The alkali metal hydroxide may be caustic soda or caustic potash. The filaments may be stretched (e.g. at a stretch ratio of 3À0) after leaving the coagulating bath, neutralized with an aqueous solution containing sodium sulphate and sulphuric acid, washed with water, dried, heat set in air at constant length at 230‹ C., crimped, cut into staple fibres and acetalized in a solution of benzaldehyde and sulphuric acid in a mixture of methanol and water.
