Abstract

The invention comprises polycyclic dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:1073367/C4-C5/1> wherein D is a polycyclic dyestuff radical which is free from SO3H groups and which contains at least four condensed rings and which is attached to X through a carbon atom of an aryl ring present in D, X represents -NH-or -S-, R represents a hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkoxyalkyl radical and n is 1 or 2. Specified polycyclic dyestuff radicals are 11 : 91-anthrapyridone, 11:91 - anthrapyrimidine, isothiazoloanthrone, pyrazoleanthrone and 31:41 - phthaloylacridone dyestuff radicals. The dyes of the above formula may be prepared by (1) esterifying a dyestuff of the formula <FORM:1073367/C4-C5/2> with an excess of a glycol of the formula R-OH; (2) reacting a metal salt of dyestuff of Formula (I) with a compound of the formula R-Z wherein Z is a Cl or Br atom; or (3) reacting one mole of a compound of the formula <FORM:1073367/C4-C5/3> and n moles of a compound of the formula <FORM:1073367/C4-C5/4> wherin one of Y1 and Y2 represents a Cl or Br atom, and the other represents an -SH or -NH2 group. Examples are given for the production of the dyes. They may be incorporated into synthetic linear polyesters by mass-coloration techniques to give orange to green shades. The polycyclic dyestuff compounds of Formula (I) may be obtained by condensing the appropriate compound of the formula D-(Z)n with an aniline carboxylic acid or mercaptobenzene carboxylic acid. An example is given for the preparation of 6:8-bis-(o-carboxyanilino)-3-methyl -11:91-anthrapyridone.
