Abstract
Oxidic ores comprising Al2O3 and SiO2 are heated in a furnace with a carbonaceous reducing agent and from 15-50% by weight, based on the Al2O3 and SiO2, of an intermetallic of Al and Si with Fe and/or Ti which is at least 75% chemically saturated with Al and/or Si, to give a molten raw alloy of Al and Si which is then tapped from the furnace. A portion of the Fe and/or Ti may be replaced by Mn and/or Cr but this replacement should preferably not exceed 10% of the total intermetallic composition. After tapping the raw alloy is cooled to about 600 DEG C. to leave the alloy as a liquid, the solid phase being the intermetallic complexes any excess elementary Si and any impurities. The solid phase may be crushed and screened to recover the elementary silicon and any of the Al/Si alloy trapped on cooling which may be returned to an earlier process step. Commercially pure aluminium may be made from the Al/Si alloy by treating it with a metallic solvent (Zn, Pb or Hg) to give a solid portion and a liquid portion from which the aluminium may be recovered by conventional techniques.
