Abstract
Sulphochlorides of aromatic compounds are prepared by reacting an aromatic compound with sulphuryl chloride or a mixture of sulphur dioxide and elementary chlorine in the presence of dimethyl formamide and sulphur trioxide. In the examples, sulphuryl chloride is added to dimethyl formamide, this mixture is added dropwise to sulphur trioxide and finally the aromatic compound is added and the mixture heated. The preparation of 1,3-dichlorobenzene - 4 - sulphochloride, tetralin sulphochloride, naphthalene - 1 - sulphochloride, p - toluene - sulphochloride and p - chlorobenzene-sulphochloride is described.
