Abstract
A transparent or semi-transparent glass for the heater plate of a gas heater (see Division F4W) has a composition of 1-3% TiO2, 1-4% ZrO2, 1-5% P2O5, 55-70% SiO2, 20-35% Al2O3, 3-5% Li2O and 0.5-4% (0-4% Na2O + 0-4% K2O) and a coefficient of expansion of 10 x 10-7 in the temperature range 0-500 DEG C. The glass is produced by being maintained for 1-2 hours at a temperature between its annealing and its softening point, namely, 650-800 DEG C. to cause crystallization to commence. The temperature is then raised slowly at a rate less than 5 DEG C./minute, to about 800-900 DEG C. to cause crystallization to advance. Finally the glass is kept for 1-2 hours at such a temperature, 800-900 DEG C. to produce transparent or semi-transparent crystallized plates.
