Abstract

A coating or impregnating composition having a total solids content of at least 8% by weight comprises an aqueous medium having dispersed therein a water-insoluble addition polymer of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules, said polymer containing at least 1% by weight of units from monomer molecules containing basic nitrogen atoms; the aqueous medium also containing a dispersing agent and 2 to 50% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of a calcium compound and/or a magnesium compound. Long lists of suitable monomers are given. Copolymers exemplified are: ethyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / styrene / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; ethyl acrylate / vinyl acetate / 4-vinylpyridine; n - butyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / b - aminoethyl vinyl ether; vinylidene chloride/ethyl acrylate/vinyltoluene/N - (dibutylaminoethyl) - methacrylamide; methyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate/vinyltolune / b - dimethylaminoethyl vinyl sulphide; ethyl acrylate / acrylonitrile / methyl methacrylate / t. - butylaminoethyl methacrylate; and a blend of the copolymers ethyl acrylate/ethyl methacrylate / 2 - methyl-5-vinylpyridine and butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/2-vinylpyridine. Calcium and magnesium compounds exemplified are calcium chloride, acetate and hydroxide, and magnesium chloride. In one example, the first copolymer listed above, prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization using octyl phenol modified with 40 ethylene oxide units, is diluted with water, calcium chloride is added and the mixture is coated on to a piece of cold rolled steel at 65 DEG C. and the water is flashed off. In the other examples, the polymer emulsions are blended with either polyethylene wax or carnauba wax, together with oleic acid, morpholine, plasticizers and surface active agents to form floor polishes to which the calcium and magnesium compounds are added and the final compositions are applied to rubber and asphalt floor tiles. Many other surfaces, to which the compositions may be applied, are specified. Conventional dyes, pigments and fillers may be incorporated in the compositions.ALSO:A coating or impregnating composition having a total solids content of at least 8% by weight comprises an aqueous emulsion containing a water-insoluble addition polymer of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules, said polymer containing at least 1% by weight of units from monomer molecules containing basic nitrogen atoms; the aqueous medium also containing a dispersing agent and 2% to 50% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of a calcium compound and/or a magnesium compound. Example 4, and acrylate-styrenemethacrylate polymer is blended with carnauba wax, together with oleic acid, morpholine, plasticizers and surface active agents to form a floor polish to which the calcium and magnesium compounds are added. Conventional dyes, pigments and fillers may be incorporated in the compositions.
