Abstract

107,172. Hunt, E. A. June 13, 1916. Vacuum cleaning-apparatus.-A vacuum cleaner nozzle is provided with a flat brush mounted between the side-plates at the rear of and parallel with the mouth of the suction passage and so connected with the floor-roller of the nozzle that the brush is pressed on the floor or lifted therefrom according as the nozzle is moved forwards or backwards; a vertically adjustable rotary brush to facilitate the raising of dust &c. is mounted in the face of the nozzle in advance of and parallel to the mouth of the suction passage and geared to the floor-roller. As shown, a brush 34 is mounted in vertically slidable bearings in the mouth of the nozzle 5, and the bearings can be pressed down to any required extent by screws 39 and milled nuts 41, which are held against vertical movement by slotted plates engaging grooves therein. A rubber-covered floor-roller 34 is mounted between the side plates 35 of the nozzle and is geared by wheels 38 to the brush, which mav be rotated in either direction. Alternatively, the bearings of the brush may be plates pivoted on the axle of one of the gear wheels and pressed down against springs by thumb-screws. A flat brush 60 is pivotally mounted between the plates 35 and a crossed belt is passed round pulleys on the brush and the roller 34, so that the brush is movable between stops and is raised or lowered according as the cleaner is moved backwards or forwards respectively. The bent end 69 of an arm 67 on a plate 68, which is in frictional contact with the roller 34, engages a vertical projection 70 on the brush to prevent backward movement of the brush when it meets any obstruction. In another form, the brush is carried between the ends of arms similar to the arms 67 and the brush ends work in curved guides as the brush is raised and lowered.
