Abstract

1,071,636. Cutting tobacco. AMF INTERNATIONAL Ltd. March 26, 1964 [March 28, 1963], No. 12375/63. Heading A4C. A rotary cutter, for cutting tobacco, comprises knives 49 each frictionally clamped to a rotary drum 2 between a base plate 42 secured to the drum 2 and the toe portion 26 of an outer plate 16, the latter having a heel portion 22 with a face 34 bearing on a tapered heel plate 8 fitted in a recess 6 in the drum 2 and the gripping pressure on the knife 49 being determined by the degree of flexure of the outer plate 16 when the latter is secured, such as by screws 36, to the drum 2. The gripping pressure is pretermined in dependence upon the degree of taper 48 provided on the heel plate 8 whereby on clamping the heel surface 34 hard against the heel plate 8 the outer plate 16, which bears on the knife 49 at the tip of its toe portion 26, is flexed to the desired extent.
