Abstract

1,070,982. Measuring wheel unbalance photoelectrically. MOBIL OIL CORPORATION. Nov.25, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962; Jan. 14, 1963], No.46454/63. Headings G1A and G1X. Unbalance detecting apparatus for vehicle wheels comprises a dynamometer roller supporting a wheel under test so that the latter carries its normal share of the vehicle weight, and means to measure oscillations of the wheel toward or away from the roller and indicate the amplitude of the frequency component proportional to the amplitude of unbalance vibrations. Light from a source 26 Fig. 3, passing the periphery of a wheel, 22, under test is detected by a photo-cell 30. The A. C. component of the output of cell 30, Fig. 4, is amplified by triode 52 and the frequencies of less than 20 c.p.s. selected by a filter 62. These frequencies are rectified at 80 to provide a D.C. signal indicative of wheel unbalance, which signal appears on meter 110. In a modification, the vibration detector may be attached to the vehicle suspension.
