Abstract

1,070,915. Ion pumps. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 30, 1965 [July 20, 1964 (2)], No. 27774/65. Heading H1D. Magnetically confined glow discharge apparatus, e.g. an ion pump, comprises an evacuable envelope 24 containing a stack of oppositely polarized magnets 31, 32 with cathode members 35 and anode members 36 disposed between polepieces 33 which extend outwardly from the poles of the magnets. The magnets 31, 32 may be of ferrite or steel, the polepieces 33, which may be tapered, of nickel-plated soft iron, and the envelope 24 of stainless steel. Cathode plates 35, e.g. of titanium, are secured to the polepieces 33 by rods 38 and pins 39 (Fig. 4, not shown). Alternatively, the polepieces 33 may be clad with the cathode material. The anode members 36 are circular cells of titanium or stainless steel brazed or welded together to form a split annulus (Fig. 3, not shown). An additional inner annulus of smaller cells may be provided (Fig. 3A, not shown). Alternative anode arrangements include a brazed or welded assembly of circular and radial strips (Fig. 3B, not shown), two rows of circular cells arranged in a square formation around magnets of square crosssection (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and two rows of circular cells arranged on each side of magnets of rectangular cross-section (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown). A coolant fluid, e.g. air, water or refrigerant such as liquid nitrogen, is passed through a conduit 49 brazed to the edges of the polepieces 33.
