Spectrum lines projected from a film on to a screen are examined by moving a scale 15 (having a series of lines 16 each associated with an electrical circuit connected by a cable 12 to a recording-apparatus) across the screen to select the line 16 most closely resembling the density or width of the line under examination and then the associated circuit is closed to make the recording-apparatus record a symbol representative of the selected line 16. The apparatus 11 comprises a row of keys 13 on top of a case, enclosing a lead from each key 13 to the cable 12 and fixture 14 to receive the scale 15. After moving the apparatus 11, on its felt base, across the screen to match a line, the corresponding key 13 is pressed to complete the associated circuit and actuate an electrically operated typewriter. A blank key is provided for actuating the typewriter space bar between each symbol and a "minus" key is pressed when the substance examined spectroscopically shows no specific element. In a modified apparatus after selecting the line 16 the scale 15 is moved relative to a single key to close a circuit associated with the selected line.
