Abstract
Benzoic acid is prepared by oxidizing a liquid monoalkylated benzene with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a polyvalent heavy metal catalyst and using benzoic acid as the sole initiator for the reaction, the benzoic acid being present initially in an amount not more than 60% by weight based on the total weight of the reaction mixture. Preferably the benzoic acid is present initially in an amount of 0.1-10%. The preferred catalysts are cobalt salts of organic acids, e.g. the acetate, benzoate or naphthenate or mixtures of these. Suitable monoalkylated benzenes are, for example, toluene, ethylbenzene, propyl benzene, and t-butylbenzene. Preferred temperature and pressure ranges for carrying out the reaction are 70-300 DEG C. and 1.05-10.5 kg./cm.2 gauge. Suitable oxygen-containing gases are air, ozone, or oxygen-enriched air.
