Abstract

1,069,875. Producing metal articles. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd. July 3, 1964 [July 19, 1963], No. 28701/63. Addition to 924,016. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A cast iron or steel piston-ring (1) has one or more circumferential grooves in its outer peripheral surface filled with a wear-resistant material defined as a ceramic material, sprayed metal coatings composed of complex alloy particles of nickel, chromium and boron contained in a metal matrix which is softer and more ductile than the complex alloy particles, or complex wear-resisting carbides contained in such a matrix. The ceramic material may be an oxide, carbide, nitride or boride of aluminium or zirconium, boron nitride or mixtures thereof. The metal matrix may be nickel, chromium or an iron alloy. After preparation of the peripheral surface which may include chemical cleaning, shot-blasting and precoating, for example with molybdenum, a layer of wear-resisting material as defined above is sprayed on to the surface and the excess is removed by grinding, milling, turning or other mechanical means to leave one or more layers (4, Fig. 3) of the wear-resisting material between bands (5) of cast iron or steel.
