Abstract

1,069,744. Finishing sheet material. JAMES HALSTEAD Ltd. Nov. 1, 1965 [Aug. 1, 1964], No. 30401/64. Heading B5A. A method of finishing calendered sheet synthetic plastics material, e.g. sheet P.V.C., comprises supporting the sheet on an endless belt conveyer and passing it through a heating oven in which it is sufficiently heat softened to relieve any residual stresses therein. The stress relieved sheet, still on the conveyer, is then passed through a low pressure nip, around a surface modifying or rectifying drum, and on to a shock cooling drum, after which it is removed from the conveyer and further cooled and finally subdivided. The surface modifying or rectifying drum serves either to smooth out surface imperfections introduced during the stress relieving or to emboss the sheet with a required pattern. The conveyer may also be patterned, e.g. woven metal wire or cloth, so that the other side of the sheet is also embossed. A sheet produced by the above material is suitable as flooring.
