Abstract
1,069,048. Nebulizer for inhalation therapy and disinfecting. DEVILBISS CO. Jan. 12, 1965 [Feb. 10, 1964], No. 1327/65. Headings A5G and A5T. [Also in Division B2] Respiratory appliances. An apparatus suitable for inhalation therapy comprises an electro-acoustic transducer 12 adapted to be energized to focus a beam of ultrasonic energy near the surface of the spray liquid in a chamber 26, and a motor driven blower 50 arranged to force a current of a carrier gas into the chamber 26 so that the spray is discharged from a fitting 51 which leads to a mask. An upwardly extending arm 53 provides a trap for large droplets. The blower may be switched off so that the spray is drawn on demand by the patient. The energy is transmitted from the transducer to the spray liquid by a coupling liquid in an intermediate chamber, the two liquids being separated by a thin plastic diaphragm. The apparatus may be used to introduce contrast media into the patients lungs for X-ray etc. purposes. The blower 50 may supply oxygen or an anaesthetic gas instead of air. The spray liquid is advantageously water. The output of the apparatus may be altered by adjusting the blower or the power output of the oscillator leading to the transducer. Disinfecting-apparatus. The inhalation apparatus above is modified to produce a fog of antiseptic for room sterilization by dispensing with the coupling liquid and the mask; the acoustic energy is delivered directly into the liquid antiseptic.
