Abstract

1,068,963. Music teaching-apparatus. E. BURDET. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 15, 1963; March 11, 1964], No..33461/64. Heading G5X. [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] In a musical instrument teaching apparatus the notes of music are printed as marks, whose lengths are related to the tonic value, on a paper or plastic band which passes under a cursor bearing marks corresponding to the instrument keys so enabling the musical notes to be related to the corresponding keys. As shown in Fig. 1 the notes are represented by black or hatched lines and the speed of travel of the band depends on the tempo of the piece. Fig. 3a shows a keyboard representation with the band passing under it; the vertical position of a note on the stave determining which key is pressed. In the case of an instrument such as a violin the various notes to be played are allotted numbers which are shown on the cursor. In an arrangement for advancing the score rollers 10 and 28 carrying the band are driven by the shaft 24 upon actuation of the spring clutches 48-46a-42 (&c.) through gearing 30 and 43 (Fig. 4, not shown). In an alternative arrangement the band is stationary and the cursor moved by a wire and pulley mechanism driven by clockwork (Fig. 13, not shown) having an eddy-current speed-control device 71 . . . 76.
