Abstract
A three-ply composite yarn comprises a bulky stretchable yarn (1)-that is a crimped or knitted one as opposed to a solely elastomeric yarn-of substantially solid structure substantially free from tension, a substantially unstretchable yarn (2) associated with yarn (1) to form a two-ply yarn (3), the stretchable yarn (1) and the substantially unstretchable yarn (2) being aligned substantially parallel to each other or twisted together with a small amount of twist, and a binding yarn (4) helically twisted around the two-ply yarn (3), the yarns (2) and (4) being of the same or different material, and at least one being of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetal, rayon, or nylon. In the many examples given, yarn (1) may be a silk, wool, or rayon acetate yarn crimped by a twisting, steaming, and untwisting treatment; a nylon yarn crimped by false-twisting or stuffer-box crimping, optionally combined when tensioned with an uncrimped nylon or wool yarn, with this composite ply then being relaxed; a blended nylon-wool yarn crimped by a knitting-unknitting treatment; a knit-unknit crimped nylon yarn combined with a false-twisted crimped nylon yarn; a zig-zag crimped metallised polyester foil; weft knitted nylon or wool yarn; knitted material cut into strips and composed of rayon, or crimped nylon and nylon or polyester; a tubular knitted yarn of nylon with a crimped nylon or water soluble yarn core, of wool and polyurethane, of silk, of polyester and crimped nylon, of crimped rayon acetate, of metallised polyester foil, or of heat-set twisted polyester; chain stitched knitted material of nylon, crimped rayon acetate, or nylon and silk; a knitted material of polyacrylonitrile, or metallised polyester foil and nylon or polyester; or a tubular knitted polyester yarn and a polyurethane yarn lightly twisted together and relaxed. Yarn (2) and/or (4) may be dissolved out of the composite yarn after it has been knitted or woven. In the examples given yarns (2) and (4) when of nylon may be crimped and tensioned to remove the crimp effect. Yarn (2) if not of the above specified four materials may be composed of wool, cotton, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, metallised polyester foil, or a plied yarn of polyester and rayon or wool.
