Abstract

1,068,607. I. C. engine stop gear. ELBEWERK ROSSLAU VEB. July 2, 1964, No. 27388/64. Heading F1K. An internal combustion engine safety device which cuts off the fuel feed when lubricating oil pressure falls below a predetermined value comprises a spring-loaded valve 19 in the fuel line normally held open by lubricating oil pressure holding a disc 20 on the valve stem 10 against a seat 12, the arrangement being such that if upon a fall in oil pressure, the disc 20 is moved off its seat and valve 19 closed, a subsequent rise in oil pressure does not re-open the valve 19. The fuel enters the device at 15 and leaves at 14 and the lubricating oil is supplied through orifice 3 to port 9. The stem 10 is guided without sliding friction by diaphragms 17, 22, 23, the diaphragms 22 and 23 balancing one another to nullify the effect of fuel pressure on the valve and the space between diaphragms 17, 23, forming an isolating chamber between the fuel and oil chambers so that leakage of either through the diaphragms can be detected. When disc 10 moves off its seat 12, lubricating oil flows back to the sump through outlet 21 so that a rise in oil pressure cannot force the disc 20 back on to its seat. A centrifugal valve may be inserted in the oil pipe leading to the device 4 to actuate the cut-off valve 19 under overspeed conditions. An extension of the valve permits manual operation of the valve 19 e.g. at starting or for stopping the engine when desired. In a modification, electromagnetic means replaces the manual means, one electromagnetic coil for closing disc 20 being connected into the circuit of the engine starter motor or pre-lubrication pump and another coil for opening valve 19 being energized in accordance with additional engine operating conditions.
