Abstract

<PICT:1068178/C1/1> Carbon black is prepared by injecting a make hydrocarbon feed into a flame formed by burning a fuel gas with a slight excess of air or other free oxygen-containing gas in a reactor 11 having a flared extension 36 at the burner end terminating in an annular closure plate 38 close to housing cover-plate 16. The flared extension 36 has louvres 37 through which air passes to the burner and acts as a combustion aid device. The make hydrocarbon is fed through pipe 20 and is directed down the centre of reactor 11 by air fed through inlet 24 and the annular passage between pipes 20 and 18. Fuel gas is fed through inlet 23 and the annular passage between pipes 18 and 17 and passes through holes 22 into the interior of flared extension 36. Air introduced at inlet 14 is preheated by passage between reactor 11 and housing 10 before reaching the burner. As shown, the louvres are sited for formation of a flame of the centrifugal type, and the spiralling motion of the air may be enhanced by helical vanes in its flow path as illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively, for a flame of the longitudinal type, rectangular vanes are used as in Fig. 2 (not shown), and the louvres are arranged at right-angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 2 and 4 also illustrate a reactor having a Venturi configuration forming by thickening of the refractory lining 12 of the reactor. This is the subject of Specification 1,068,177. The reactor is connected to a quench section 26 with a water spray 29.
