Abstract
The properties of diene elastomers e.g. cold-flow, are improved by heating a solution or dispersion of a diene elastomer in a liquid medium at temperatures of 10 DEG to 170 DEG C. while in contact with a compound containing at least one boron-hydrogen bond. The boron compounds may have the formula BnHn + 4 or Bn\Hn + 6 in which n is 2 to 10, and are preferably addition products of boranes with amines. The diene polymers are suitably butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, and chloroprene polymers, and copolymers of these dienes with vinyl or vinylidene compounds e.g. styrene and acrylonitrile. Suitable solvents or dispersing agents are aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons and chlorohydrocarbons, and also, as the continuous dispersion phase, water, in which case the elastomers may be first dissolved in an organic solvent, and the solution dispersed in the aqueous phase. In the examples, (1) polybutadiene, prepared using TiCl4/I2/AlR3, in which R is an alkyl group, is treated with (C2H5)3N: BH3 in toluene; (2) polybutadiene, prepared using (C4H9O)TiT3/Al(i-C4H9)3, is treated with (C2H5)2NH: BH3 in benzene; and (3) polybutadiene, prepared as in (2), is treated with (C4\H3)3\N : BH3 in benzene.
