Abstract

Polyarylene ethers are prepared by reacting oxygen with a monophenol in the presence of a catalyst in an organic solvent for the polymer and an amount of ethylene glycol which is greater than that which is soluble in the organic solvent. The ethylene glycol may be present in an amount of 3 to 30% by weight of the amount of the solvent. The reaction mixture is stirred or shaken and undesirable products pass from the solvent into the ethylene glycol phase Polyarylene ethers having relative viscosities of at least 2.90 measured at 30 DEG C. on 1% by weight solutions in benzene and containing not more than 20 milli-equivalents of hydroxyl groups (which may have been esterified or etherified) per kilogram of polymer, are obtained by the process. In examples polyarylene ethers are obtained by passing air through 2,6-dimethyl-phenol in the presence of catalysts obtained from dimethyllaurylamine, cuprous chloride and cupric chloride; the solvents are toluene and trichloroethylene, and ethylene glycol is present.
