Abstract

Loose keratin fibres are reacted under free radical initiating conditions with at least one ethylenic compound having, in polymer form, a glass transition temperature below about 40 DEG C., and thereafter forming from the fibres a fabric having high flat stability. Ethylenic compounds specified are methyl acrylate, C2-C10 alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, hydroxyalkyl methacrylates, tert.-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, vinyl carboxylates and vinylidene halides. Free radical initiators specified are peroxides, azo compounds and redox systems. The examples describe contacting wool fibres with aqueous liquids containing ferric nitrate, hydrogen peroxide and: (1) butyl acrylate, and (2) mixtures of ethyl or butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile.
