Ink-ribbon feed.-An ink-ribbon feed comprises an intermittently operated rotatable feed drum 35 contacting the ribbon, a pressure roller, Fig. 3 (64), a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism 111 to draw the ribbon R from a frictionbraked supply spool 17, and a delicate let-off or jockey device 155, 157, 169. 171 arranged to lengthen the ribbon by an amount equivalent to each intermittent feed. The ribbon is a light " once-only " ribbon feed across a printing plate P and below a platen 15. The feed is derived from the printing machine by a link 109 which oscillates a pawl (121) of the ratchet mechanism. Fig. 6 (not shown), connected to a gear 119 rotating a small gear on the pressure roller shaft 63. The pressure roller comprises a resilient surface and is movable to a non-operative position for threading the ribbon. The pressure roller 64 is spring mounted and the pressure is adjustable by a mechanism (81, 85); it has a carbon scraper blade (97) and a carbon collecting tray situated below. From the drive and pressure rollers 35, 64 the ribbon is guided over rollers 175, 177 and a second jockey device 195 keeps the ribbon taut while the take-up spool 23 winds up the used ribbon. The spool 23 is continuously driven through a friction clutch during a feeding operation. Brakes.-An adjustable friction brake, Fig. 4 (not shown), stops the feed rollers from spinning and a brake 161, Fig. 1, operated by a light, long spring 165 acts directly on the ribbon on the supply spool 17. Adjustable feed.-The amount of ribbon feed is adjustable to suit the size of the printing area by a shroud (133), Fig. 6, having a cam surface (135) which controls the amount of engagement the pawl (121) has with the ratchet-wheel 117. The shroud is manually adjustable by a knob 143 and rod 141 having a pointer 147 addressing a scale 145.
