Abstract

1,067,226. Separating gases. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 16, 1964 [July 2, 1963; July 30, 1963; Nov. 4, 1963; Jan. 6, 1964], No. 24958/64. Heading B1L. [Also in Division F4] A heaterless adsorption system is used to provide an oxygen enriched air environment in an enclosed space by a method comprising introducing a stream of air at at least atmospheric pressure into a first bed 1 containing adsorbent selective to nitrogen, discharging an oxygen-enriched primary effluent from the bed, conveying part of the primary effluent by conduits 7 and 12 to the enclosed space, for example room (30) in Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown), conveying the remainder of the primary effluent by lines 22 and 8 at a pressure lower than the adsorption pressure through adsorbent bed 2 which has been previously used to adsorb nitrogen from the air and which has been partially purged by reducing the pressure in the bed, obtaining a secondary effluent from bed 2 and discharging it by lines 6, 16 and 17, and continuing cyclically and alternately operating the beds. Adsorbents for nitrogen include zeolites 5A, 13X, 10X chabazite, analeite, alumina, silica gel, charcoal, graphite and bentonite. In an alternative embodiment zeolite 4A may be used to adsorb oxygen selectively; secondary effluent is then discharged into the enclosed space. Types A and X zeolites may have from 30% to 100% of their sodium cations replaced by Ca, Mg, Sr or Ag cations. A "3¢A" sieve is prepared by replacing 9% to 11% of the sodium cations in a 4A sieve by potassium cations. The 4A sieve may be first exchanged with Sr, 30%-40% of the Sr cations are exchanged with Na, then the Na is replaced by K.
