Abstract
Dimers of alpha, beta-unsaturated nitriles of the formula <FORM:1067042/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 independently represent hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, are prepared by treating said nitriles with an organic tertiary phosphine (including dichlorophenyl phosphine) or with a tertiary phosphine adduct of the formula (R3P)nNi(CO)4- n or (R3P)nNiB2 wherein the R's are alkyl or aryl groups, B is acrylonitrile, cinnamonitrile, fumaronitrile or acrolein and n is 1 or 2. Monohydric alcohols, hydrocarbon and aprotic solvents and polymerization inhibitors such as para-tertiarybutyl catechol may also be present.
