Abstract

[Also in Division B8] An apparatus for sealing small objects, e.g. tablets, between two aluminium foils 18, 36 comprises a drum 20 which has spaced cavities 24 into which a foil 18 is depressed by stamping tools 70 associated with a stamping drum 68 covered with a thick layer of elastic material 72, e.g. rubber, so preventing the formation of creases, the coating clamping the foil against the drum prior to shaping where the foil 18 is forced into the recesses by the tools. A second foil 36 is then applied and sealed to the first foil. In one embodiment the tools 70 are secured on the drum 68 beneath the coating. In an alternative embodiment, three such stamping wheels (68<SP>1</SP>), (68<SP>11</SP>), (68<SP>111</SP>), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided each having stamping tools (70<SP>1</SP>), (70<SP>11</SP>), (70<SP>111</SP>), beneath coatings (72<SP>1</SP>), (7211), (72<SP>111</SP>) respectively of increasing length which progressively depress the foil 18 into the cavities 24. In another embodiment, the stamping wheel is mounted on a pivoted arm (84), Fig. 4 (not shown), cam means moving the wheel towards the drum 20 when a cavity 24 is adjacent. The stamping tools (92), Fig. 5 (not shown), mounted on a drum oscillated as in the last embodiment may operate through apertures (92) in a rubber-coated drum which surrounds the tool carrying drum. In a further variation, tools (70A) may be mounted for radial sliding by cam, Fig. 3 (not shown), hydraulic or pneumatic means. After the foil 18 has been depressed, objects are fed into the cavities and the upper foil 36 applied and sealed thereto by a roller 40. A perforating or cutting knife 52 cuts or notches the strip of packed objects longitudinally if two or more rows are formed and a knife 56 provides transverse cuts or perforations. The cavities 24 in the drum 20 may be provided with a vent in the bottom thereof to facilitate the foil depressing process.
