Abstract

Shaped articles of hydrophobic materials, e.g. aromatic polyesters, synthetic polyamides, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, cellulose esters and polyolefins, are dyed by treatment in the same bath successively (a) with one or more mono-or polynuclear aromatic amines containing at least one -NH2 group and/or condensation products thereof with aliphatic or aromatic aldehydes and/or condensation products of said amines with reaction products of alkali metal bisulphites with aliphatic aldehydes and (b) with a Na or K salt of dichloro-isocyanuric acid. The two dyeing steps may take place at up to 140 DEG C or lower in the presence of carriers. An especially suitable compound (a) is a condensation product of said amine with an aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde which contains an -SO3H or other solubilizing group. The dyebath may also contain a non-ionic and an anionic surfactant and trisodium phosphate. Examples are given.
