Galleys -The open end of a galley 10 is closed by a generally rectangular movable member 14 having pawls 13 engaging racks 12 on the galley side walls and releasable against a spring 17 for removal of the member 14. The member 14 can be moved inwardly in increments of 12-point ems to come as closely as possible to type matter 40, the depth of the page being read off in ems on a scale 11a through an opening 11b. A rectangular sensing member 22 on the inner face of the member 22 and urged towards the latter by springs 24, is forced against the type by lateral movement of a wedge member 28 by means of a plunger operated by a toggle lever 23. At a particular pressure, a sprung ball 35 mounted in a passage 36 in the wedge member is forced out of a recess in the plunger so as to break the connection between the lever 23 and the member 22, at which point the position of the wedge and thus of the member 22 is read in points on a scale by a pointer on the wedge, thus giving, in conjunction with the scale 1 1a the exact depth of the page The closed end of the galley is provided with a lower plate 38 having two punches and two guide holes, and an upper detachable plate 39 having two guide dowels and two punch holes, whereby a translucent sheet or foil can be secured between the plates by punching two holes in the sheet to overlie the type for proofing, and the sheet can be replaced in the same position by locating the holes on the punches for registering a second colour.
