Abstract
1,065,918. Ionization counters. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 3, 1965 [Sept. 11, 1964 (2); March 19, 1964], Nos. 37236/64, 33666/65 and 11887/65. Divided out of 1,065,919. Heading H1D. [Also in Divisions G1 and H5] In back-scatter geometry X-ray analysis apparatus (see Division G1), the source-target combination, which produces X- rays for irradiation of the sample, is mounted with respect to the detector, which receives fluorescent X-radiation from the sample, such that the external radiation-receiving surface of the detector extends at least partially around the perimeter of the target. The target 5 is supported by a frusto-conical holder 4, of tungsten alloy or gold. The holder 4 stops direct radiation from the radioactive source 7 reaching the detector. In the arrangement shown, the sourcetarget combination is mounted in a central hole in the annular end window 40 of a gas-filled detector, which is covered by a filter 11. In an alternative arrangement the source-target combination is mounted in a central hole in an annular side window (Fig. 10, not shown). In a further arrangement (Fig. 11, not shown), two gas-filled detectors have semi-annular windows which form a complete annulus around the source-target combination. Each window may be provided with a different one of a pair of matched filters.
