A bed table which is supported by two telescopic legs 17, has a central section 30 of the table top pivotally mounted to form an inclined book rest with its front edge abutting a front frame member 11. A rear frame member 12 is discontinuous to provide a free space beneath the bookrest. the bookrest 30 is supported in its inclined position by links 33. The mechanism for raising and lowering the table comprises screw jacks 27 disposed in the telescopic legs 17 and rotated through bevel gears 25, 26 by a drive spindle 23 disposed in a longitudinal frame member 14.
