Abstract
1,065,253. Continuous furnaces. NORTON CO. July 6, 1965 [July 8, 1964], No. 28526/65. Heading F4B. Workpieces, particularly ceramic or resinbonded porous articles such as grinding wheels 11 are suspended above a refractory hearth 18 with numerous small evenly spaced perforations by gas under pressure and at the desired firing temperature directed through the perforations and are moved through the firing zone at a predetermined speed. The speed of travel is regulated by a positively driven conveyer 62 at the lower end of the slightly inclined hearth to less than the natural speed of travel under gravity, and workpieces are continuously fed to the furnace by a conveyer 65 so that the workpieces are in contact with each other. Hot gas from the combustion chamber 22 is recirculated through passages 16, 17 and insulated plenum chambers to the distribution chambers 27, 28, 29, 30 and air slides 66, 67 receive the workpieces from the conveyer 65 and feed them to the conveyer 62 respectively. The refractory walls and floor of the distribution chambers 24, 27, 28,29, 30 and the hearth 18 are held in place by springs 56, 57 to allow for thermal expansion.
