Abstract
106,491. Badin, R. E. April 15, 1914, [Convention date]. Vacuum apparatus.-Liquid, which may be fuel or cooling water for internal-combustion engines, or lubricating-oil, is raised by suction from a main tank to a subsidiary tank at a higher level, whence it is discharged to the place required, the suction being augmented by the use of a simple or multiple Venturi tube. The apparatus is applicable to aircraft and marine engines and comprises a main tank 1, subsidiary tank 2, and suction chamber 5 connected by a pipe 6 to a double Venturi tube 4 mounted preferably on a back rib of a plane and behind the propeller. The chamber 5 is provided with an air valve 7, contains a float comprising two disks 10, 11, which form ensures a rapid opening of the air valve, and is connected to the main tank 1 through a pipe 8 with a check valve 8<1>. When suction is produced by the tube 4, liquid rises through pipe 8 into chamber 5, raises the float 10, 11 and ultimately lifts the valve 7, thus destroying the vacuum and permitting a discharge of the liquid through the pipe 9 into tank 2 whence it flows through pipe 3 to the carburettor or other part. The apparatus may be utilized as a liquid meter by counting the oscillations of the float. For use on a ship, the tube 4 may be submerged in the water. A hand suction-pump 16 may be used at starting. A form of apparatus is described in which the subsidiary tank 2 is dispensed with and two chambers such as 5 work alternatively, one discharging while the other is filling; the suction is produced by a Venturi tube in the induction pipe between the throttle valve and the engine cylinder. A double Venturi tube may be arranged in the interior of a divergent cone arranged on the engine silencer.
