Abstract

The polymerization of styrene is inhibited by the addition thereto of nitroso-benzene or a halogen and/or alkyl derivative thereof, beta-nitroso-alpha-naphthol, p-nitrosophenol, or an N-nitrosodiarylamine.ALSO:The polymerization of methyl and cetyl methacrylates is inhibited by the addition thereto of nitrosobenzene or a halogen and/or alkyl derivative thereof, beta-nitroso-alpha-naphtol, p-nitrosophenol, or an N-nitroso-diarylamine.ALSO:Coloured polymers are made by polymerizing monomers, e.g styrene and methyl and cetyl methacrylates, containing a coloured nitroso compound selected from nitrosobenzene and its halogen and/or alkyl derivatives, beta-nitroso-alpha-naphthol, p-nitrosophenol or an N-nitrosodianylamine, such compounds functioning as polymerization inhibitors prior to the addition of a polymerization initiator.
