Abstract

1,064,800. Printing processes. RANK XEROX Ltd. Dec. 16, 1964 [Dec. 30, 1963; Jan. 3, 1964], No. 51245/64. Heading B6C. [Also in Division G2] A double-sided copy of an original is pro duced by transferring tacky xerographic powder images of the original to both sides of a copy paper. The powder images are transferred to, or formed on, a non-stick surface and made tacky by exposure to the vapour of a solvent for one of the components of the powder. In one form (Fig. 5, not shown), the tacky images are transferred simultaneously to both sides of a copy paper under the influence of an electric field. As shown, metal drum 11 is formed with a layer of vitreous selenium photo-conductor which is coated either with non-stick silicone oil or a thin layer of polytetrafluoroethylene. A sensitizing charge is provided by corona discharge means 31 and the drum 11 moves past an exposure slot to receive the image of a moving microfilm 10. A development chamber 42 includes a toner dispenser 46 and cascade means. The developed image is subjected to the vapour of solvent 65 to produce tackiness which immediately dries when transferred to copy paper which is fed to rubber-covered pressure roller 71. After receiving an image on one side, the copy paper falls out at the top of roller 71 and is re-introduced at the bottom in an inverted position. Puffer 95 separates the leading edge of the paper from drum 11. A web 107 of soft absorbent paper cleans the drum and may be pre-treated with silicone oil to replenish the drum surface. A moist cellulose sponge 115 and a fluorescent lamp 69 remove the remaining charge. The sequence of operations can be controlled manually or by cams on shaft 29 (Fig. 2, not shown). In other forms, the developed image is transferred to a separate non-stick surface on a drum contiguous with the drum 11 (Figs. 1, 5 and 7, not shown) under the influence of an electric field. Alternate images can be made tacky on this drum, while the remaining images are transferred to a further drum to be made tacky thereon.
