Abstract
Lubricating oil is obtained from a low-viscosity index heavy oil boiling in the lubricating oil range and containing aromatics and poly-cycloparaffins by hydrocracking the latter constituents and aromatics to lower boiling dealkylated aromatics, cycloparaffins and paraffins under conditions near the reforming threshold (the point at which aromatization and hydrogenation processes are in balance) including a temperature of 700-900 DEG F. and a pressure of 1000-4000 p.s.i.a. to obtain a product without significantly decreasing the total aromatic content and recovering a high viscosity index lubricating oil boiling above the initial boiling point of the feed and which may be dewaxed. Suitable conditions are such as to effect at least 10% dehydrogenation of perhydrophenanthrene to aromatics (as indicated in a graph) and a space velocity of 0.3-5 vol/vol/hr. using as catalyst a sulphided Group VI preferably wiht a Group VIII metal on a cracking support. The product may be catalytically hydrogenated to obtain a stable product, and fractionated to recover fractions boiling over a range not exceeding 100 DEG F.
