Abstract

1,064,634. Extruding plastics sheets. PLASTIC PRODUCTS Ltd. Aug. 7, 1964 [Aug. 16, 1963], No. 32201/64. Heading B5A. Downwardly extruded pairs of sheets of plastics material for supplying to a blow mould for making hollow articles are obtained of uniform thickness by the use of sheet withdrawal means mounted on the extruder head 1 and comprising a frame 4 carrying devices 12, 12a and 13, 13a for gripping the extruded sheets 2, 3, and movable downwardly by power-actuated means such as a motor-driven roller 9 driving a vertical rod 5 carrying the frame 4, and upwardly as by a spring 11. The grippers 12, 12a and 13, 13a comprise water-cooled tubes, two, 12a and 13, being fixed to the frame 4, and two, 12 and 13a, being movable towards the fixed grippers by pneumatic piston and cylinder devices 14, 14a against the action of springs (not shown). In operation the frame 4 is initially immediately below the extruder head 1, and the ends of the extruded sheets 2, 3 are gripped by the grippers and at the same time a pneumatic cylinder and piston device 10, 10a is actuated to engage the drive roller 9 with the rod 5, so that the extruded sheets are drawn downwardly at a rate which may be varied to control their thickness. When the desired length has been extruded the grippers are released and the drive roller G retracted from the rod 5 so that the frame 4 is drawn upwardly by the spring 11. The sheets 2, 3 are then reengaged by the grippers, severed by a knife (not shown) just above the frame 4, and the frame is lowered to carry the sheets to a blow mould (not shown).
