Abstract
1,064,622. Extruding multi-layer cable coverings. SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 26, 1965 [April 24, 1964; Aug. 26, 1964], No. 8344/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H1] A cable is formed by extruding on to a conductor polyethylene containing a cross-linking agent and polyethylene containing no crosslinking agent to cover it with a plurality of layers which are heated to cross-link the layers simultaneously. As shown, the stranded conductor of the cable is passed through passage 21 of the die and three layers of polyethylene are extruded via passages 22 and 23, 24 and 25, and 26 and 27 respectively. The middle layer is that containing the cross-linking agent. The inner layer may comprise semi-conducting polyethylene and the outer may contain a colouring agent for identification purposes, and may be applied as stripes on the surface of the middle layer (Fig. 2, not shown).
