Boot-sole sewing-machines ; rotary horns; starting and stopping gear. -- In a sole-sewing machine of the type having a rotatable horn carrying a looper for threading a barbed needle which penetrates the work from the side of the work opposite to the horn, the horn is arranged so that it can be moved laterally into and out of sewing position without producing such disconnexion of the mechanism for actuating the looper as permits variation of the timing. The horn 16 is supported on a bracket 20 pivoted on bearings 22 across the machine. The axis of these bearings is a tangent to the bevel-wheels 17, 18 which drive the looper. A locking-bolt 25 movable by the treadle 44 co-operates with the projection 27 to hold the horn in or out of sewing position. The treadle 44 is provided with a pawl 48 which engages either the pin 40 on the lever 39 or the pin 37 on the lever 36 according to whether or not the plate 50 on the treadle is pushed forward by the operator. The lever 36 controls the clutch. The lever 39 is connected by a rod 35 to a hellcrank 32 with a cam which controls the bell-crank 37* connected to the presser-bar-lifting mechanism through the rod 39*, and also to the horn-locking bolt 25. The horn may be moved by a spring away from the working position, or may be moved by linkage connected to the horn-locking and presser-foot mechanism and having means, as a toggle-link, which enables the machine to be run when the horn is out of active position, if necessary.
