Abstract
1,064,399. Welding by fusion; making turbines. ROVER CO. Ltd. Dec. 16, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 52749/64. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F1] A blade carrying member or members of a turbine or compressor rotor is welded to the periphery of a disc by opposed electron beams which terminate in a cavity formed by a groove in the disc and/or the member or members. The blades and the blade carrying member are integrally cast. Where one member (2, Fig. 2, not shown) of ring-shape carrying all the blades (3) is cast, the member is shrunk on to a forged disc (1) and is welded by opposed electron beam devices (9, 10). Grooves (8) formed in both the disc (1) and the member (2) separate the welds (4) so formed and enable interpenetration of the welded zones of the two beams to be avoided. The disc and the blade carrying member(s) are of different metals.
