Abstract
A polish comprises an aqueous emulsion of: - (a) water, (b) an alkali-soluble resin other than shellac, (c) a water-insoluble wax, (d) a detergent, (e) an emulsion containing as the major monomeric constituents 30-90% of at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a C1- 3 saturated alcohol, 5-15% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and 5-70% of styrene, (f) a coalescing agent which fuses discrete polymer particles into a single phase during drying of the polish, and (g) a plasticizer for component (b) and the copolymer of (e); components (c) and (e) having a particle size below 400 millimicrons. Component (e) may be an aqueous emulsion containing 40% solids, 85-95% of which are polymers and the remainder being an emulsifier, e.g. an alkyl (C10- 16) sulphate, a viscosity at 20 DEG C. of 50-200 cp., a pH of 8-9 and an S.G. of 1.053-1.057. Component (b) may be a solution in ammonium hydroxide of an adduct of fumaric acid and rosin esterified with a mixture of ethylene and propylene glycols. Component (c) may be an oxidized polyethylene wax. Component (d) may be nonyl phenoxy (ethoxy)14 ethanol. Component (f) may be diethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Component (g) may be tributoxyethyl phosphate. The composition may also contain a potassium salt of N-ethyl N-perfluoro-octane-sulphonyl glycide21 as emulsifier, a salt of a C12- 20 fatty acid and ammonia or an amine, e.g. morpholine oleate, and chloromethoxy propylmercuric acetate.
