Abstract

[Also in Divisions F4 and G2] The base of an obstruction warning device is of hemispherical shape with a flattened bottom and is provided with fins 2 to prevent rolling if knocked over the centre of gravity of the device being so placed that it is selfrighting. The base has internal partitions 4 arranged to form compartments of differing shape to accommodate batteries 5 of various shapes, and is closed by a panel 6 having a pillar 18 supporting an electric lamp 19. A transparent dome 9 which may be coloured, is secured to the base by a flange 10 fitting against a flange 3 on the base, the flanges being secured together by a clamping ring-11. The current supply to the lamp may be controlled by a light-sensitive device 21 which operates a relay 20 to close the bulb circuit when the device 21 is not illuminated from outside e.g. after night fall. A conical or paraboloidal reflector 25 is mounted below the bulb to reflect the light outwards and also to screen the device 21 from light from the bulb. A similar reflector 26 may be mounted above the bulb. The panel 6 may carry a socket 23 into which a plug connected to the output of a battery charger can be inserted, the plug simultaneously disconnecting the lamp from the battery. The upper and lower parts of the globe may be metallized to render them reflecting and to protect the device 21 from light from a horizontal direction. The colour of the globe may be selected to filter out light rays from a street lamp which would otherwise operate the device 21 or a filter for a similar purpose may be provided on the device. The globe may be replaced by a convertional marker cone on the top of which an auxiliary lamp may be mounted and connected to the plug. If desired, the cone may be translucent. The direction in which light falls on the photoelectric cell may be controlled by a light pipe.
