Abstract
Ethylene is polymerized by a method comprising providing two streams of ethylene at pressures above 15,000 p.s.i.g., cooling the first stream to below 60 DEG C. and mixing a catalyst therewith, heating the second stream to at least 120 DEG C., continuously recombining said streams in a polymerization zone by flowing the first coaxially within the second while radially injecting the first into the second at a multiplicity of points along said polymerization zone whereby uniform temperature and catalyst concentration are maintained in the zone during polymerization of the ethylene, and removing ethylene containing polyethylene from the polymerization zone. A single ethylene stream may be compressed and divided or two separate streams may be compressed, the first being a recycle stream which may contain 70 to 90% of the ethylene, and the second a stream of fresh ethylene. Catalyst such as lauroyl peroxide may also be added to the second stream. Injection may be effected by maintaining a pressure differential between the streams. The catalyst may be an organic peroxide, azo compound or oximine, and may be added as a solution in a hydrocarbon solvent. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the method of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the polymerization of ethylene using as catalysts benzene solutions of mixture of t. butyl perbenzoate with dicumyl peroxide or t. butyl peracetate, and a telogen such as butane.
